To do well in this challenge, you will need a number of tools to help you out. As I’m a big fan of open or free software, you will have them on top of the list. The only one thing that is almost mandatory is to have a broadband connection. Part of the training will be delivered with video, and those files can excess 30Mb. Make sure that you have a good connection, and if not you will have to borrow it from someone that has it.
Communications: Skype: (free)this software allows you to call other people on the internet for free. Voice quality is excellent, and has tons of extensions and features. Get a good set of headphones with the microphone. Once you have your account, let the team know your call id, by sending me an email. My Skype id is jpmattenet, drop me a call when ready. iTunes: (free) this excellent software from apple will keep track of your music and podcasts for you We will be listening to podcast almost every day, so you must have this installed. IM: Instant messenger tools abound and are not required, but I still use them a lot. It is lees intrusive than a Skype call. I’m using trillian free version, that lets me have Yahoo, ICQ, MSN and AOL under the same interface. You can contact me using jp_mattenet on Yahoo. Web Browser: Unfortunately we have to live with browser personalities. I’m a big fan of Firefox, because of the long list of plugs in that exist, especially to develop web pages, and fix scripting errors. Firefox, plays nice with your current settings, and you can install it without fear in your PC. Latest versions will auto update, keeping your browser always up to date. Note: remember to test your pages with Internet Explorer AND Firefox. Link: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/
This is not all… but is getting too long for a single post. We will continue with the online services and tools.
