The difficulty of collecting marketing ideas is that you have to get started first.

Visiting stores and looking around, is a good way, but we have other choices. One of them is to look into your hobbies, or things that you have affinity and see what needs you can fulfil:

Examples

In your backyard you have collected some old cars, waiting for a second life.
What is stopping you from fixing them? What products will you buy?

Idea: a guide on how to paint old cars, including the original colours.

You love comics, and you have a collection of comics from the 50s.
What sort of products will you buy?

Idea: A guide to locate and buy comics using eBay?

The mechanics is simple:

(1)Topic of interest ->(2)Unfulfilled need ->(3)product idea

It is easier to start with what you know already. It has an extra advantage that you like and know the subject. And you can spot the needs more easily. In the long term, to really succeed you need to be able to produce many products in different niches, and that will certainly take you to niches you are not familiar with.

How to deal with the fear of going out of your comfort zone

Where most of us struggle to locate niche ideas is that we feel that we don’t know the subject well enough to create something of value for that market.

Although this is a valid concern, it can be fixed:

  1. You will start by positioning yourself, not as an expert, but as an enthusiast, or passionated in your subject. By positioning yourself as a 'non' expert, you are allowing yourself space to learn in the process.
  2. By the time you have finished with your market research, you will have collected a lot of information and resources on the topic. That will put you already ahead of the pack.
  3. By interrogating your potential customer about their burning questions, and providing answers to them you will gain the “authority”.

As you can see, it requires some effort, but it should not stop you from getting into new subjects. After all, learning new things is fun!

Action Points:
1. Hit replay and tell me how many ideas have you got already.
2. If you have not started, why?

To your success!
